About Quickies

For me, the real fun of leather crafting is the creative aspects.. making an altogether new design, simulating and improving an existing one, or combining things in unique ways. The skills required to actually execute the construction of a piece are pretty basic, and once they are mastered a whole realm of possibilities open up.

The Quickies page is something of a jumping-off point to these possibilities. I'm going to ramble on about how projects might be combined, changed, or perverted to give a different and potentially desirable result. Consider it an easy way to add projects without really going through the painful process of making plan and page (you'd be surprised how much time it takes to make a project page for this site). The onus is on you to creatively implement the comments on this page. With that, let's jump in! Check back, because this page is going to grow.

Belts

The first thing that comes to mind is belts. As you probably realize, it's quite possible to securely restrain someone in less than a minute with a few belts. They are quite simple to make, effectively following the 'belt strap' portion of the buckling cuffs project. Making your own belts instead of stealing grandpa's (I hate it when his pants fall down) lets you have exactly what you want. Thinking out of the box, this could mean curved belts, angled ones, and even multi-belt contraptions (which mortals know as a harness). My preference tends to quite heavy belts, 2" or 3" wide monsters with two-tongued buckles. But make whatever your heart desires.

Cuffs-to-Cuffs

There are thousands (well, at least tens) of configurations that could be interesting if you consider permanently attaching cuffs to things. Here are some ideas:

1. To each other. Handcuffs, are of course, two cuffs permanently attached to each other. Why not in leather? This configuration has the advantage of securing the limbs very closely together while not allowing movement in relation to one another (as is the case with a belt). You might attach cuffs with a single key post, allowing them to pivot, or with two, keeping the rigid. Gets even more interesting when you think about _four_ cuffs together.. or maybe more than one cuff-ee!

2. To a bondage belt. Secure hands to waist with a permanent set of belt/cuffs. Again, you might consider rigid or pivot mountings. Note that rigid mountings should be positioned perpendicular to the belt itself, as this is the natural position of the hands.

3. To thigh cuffs. Similar to (2), cuff to thigh cuffs is a popular option. Rigid mounting should be wrist cuffs parallel to thigh cuffs.

4. To a spreader bar. Cuffs on each end. Or four cuffs, ankle-sized on the ends and wrist-sized in the middle.

5. To a collar. Force the hands next to the neck, or hang a pair of cuffs from the collar using a belt-like connector, adjustable to different lengths.

Paddles

There are numerous ways to make paddles out of leather. They'll probably end up as a Project, but here are some quick thoughts for now.

The basic leather paddle is two or more pieces of heavy leather glued together with contact cement. These can be adorned with rivets, studs, whatever. Finish the edges after gluing the pieces together, and you may need to sand the edges to get an even match.

The business (smacking) ends can be left unattached, so they flap about. This decreases the pain caused, while increasing the noise created. This construct will cause the glue to pull apart, so the layers are best riveted or sewn together.

One problem with _just_ leather is that the entire paddle will be rather floppy. Solve this dilemma by gluing a rigid metal plate in the middle, either for the entire length of just the handle region. Or use wood grips on both sides in the handle portion.

One last thought. Tandy sells a 1/4" rubber sheet as a cutting surface. This makes a wicked-evil paddle..
