Four-Strand Round Braid without Core

This braid is illustrated in ELRB on page 107, Plate 37 Figures A-D. The four strands are most commonly formed by looping two double-length strands through a ring or over something, resulting in four ends. In the illustrations on this page, four individual shoelaces have been placed in a clamp. RED and GREEN would be two ends of the same strand, while YELLOW and PURPLE would form the other.

4roundThe strands in the clamp, ready for braiding. Again, GREEN and RED are one strand, YELLOW and PURPLE are the other strand. Plate 37 Fig A.
4roundThis is the starting position for this braid, Plate 37 Fig B. Cross the two ends of a single strand (GREEN and RED here) as shown, with the GREEN strand on top from left to right. Take two strands in each hand: YELLOW and RED in the left, GREEN and PURPLE in the right. These same strands will remain in these hands throughout braiding.
4roundJust like four-strand over a core, this braid has a one-step movement done first on the left then on the right. Here is the movement on the left, using the outer strand in that hand. The YELLOW strand goes behind the RED strand, under the outer right strand, over the inner right strand, returing to the left hand as the inner strand. Plate 37 Fig C shows this path.
4roundThe same movement on the right, again working the outer strand (PURPLE in prior picture). The PURPLE strand goes behind the GREEN strand, under one over one, returning to the right hand. The flesh side (with line) always faces inside, and is concealed.
4roundMovement from the left using the RED strand.
4roundStrands intentionally loose. Note the path of the GREEN strand, worked in the movement from the right.
4roundHere the GREEN strand has been pulled down to complete this movement.
4roundAnother loose view, with the YELLOW strand worked from the left.
4roundThe YELLOW strand has been pulled tight.
4roundBraid to the desired length. Plate 37 Fig D shows a short completed braid. You may stop at the completion of any movement... after working any single strand.
