This braid is illustrated in ELRB on page 107, Plate 37 Figures A-D. The four strands are most commonly formed by looping two double-length strands through a ring or over something, resulting in four ends. In the illustrations on this page, four individual shoelaces have been placed in a clamp. RED and GREEN would be two ends of the same strand, while YELLOW and PURPLE would form the other.

 | This is the starting position for this braid, Plate 37 Fig B. Cross the two ends of a single strand (GREEN and RED here) as shown, with the GREEN strand on top from left to right. Take two strands in each hand: YELLOW and RED in the left, GREEN and PURPLE in the right. These same strands will remain in these hands throughout braiding. |
 | Just like four-strand over a core, this braid has a one-step movement done first on the left then on the right. Here is the movement on the left, using the outer strand in that hand. The YELLOW strand goes behind the RED strand, under the outer right strand, over the inner right strand, returing to the left hand as the inner strand. Plate 37 Fig C shows this path. |
