Four-Strand Round Braid with Core

This braid is illustrated in ELRB on page 107, Plate 37 Figures 1-5. Grant's numbered strands are as follows: 1 = red, 2 = green, 3 = yellow, 4 = purple. The four strands can be loose or attached at the top, but in either case should be secured to the core at top while braiding.

4roundThe standing ends of four strands have been secured to the core, a wooden dowel, using a rubber band. From front left to the right, these colors are: RED, GREEN, YELLOW, PURPLE. These colors correspond to 1-2-3-4 on the Grant diagrams. If braiding for real, these strands would be wider, with a total width equal to or slightly greater than the circumference of the core.
4roundThis is the starting position for this braid, Plate 37 Fig 1. Cross the front two strands (1/RED and 2/GREEN) as shown, with the 1/RED strand on top. Take two strands in each hand: PURPLE and GREEN in the left, RED and YELLOW in the right. These same strands will remain in these hands throughout braiding.
4roundThis braid has a one-step movement, done first on the left then on the right. Here is the movement on the left, using the outer strand in that hand. The PURPLE strand goes behind the core, under the outer right strand, over the inner right strand, returing to the left hand as the inner strand. The arrow on Plate 37 Fig 1 shows this path.
4roundThe same movement on the right, again working the outer strand (YELLOW in prior picture). The YELLOW strand goes behind the core, under one over one, returning to the right hand. The arrow on Plate 37 Fig 2 shows this path. The flesh side (with line) always faces the core, and is concealed.
4roundStrands intentionally loose. Note the path of the GREEN strand, worked in the movement from the left.
4roundHere the GREEN strand has been pulled down to complete this movement.
4roundAnother loose view, with the RED strand worked from the right.
4roundThe RED strand has been pulled tight.
4roundBraid to the desired length. Plate 37 Figs 4 and 5 show the movement from left and right once braiding has progressed. You may stop at the completion of any movement... after working any single strand.
4roundThe same braid, tightenned down. This under-one over-one pattern creates a diamond braid. Because these four strands were thin relative to the core size, this tightenned braid has a steep angle to the core.
