Three-Strand Flat Braid

This braid is illustrated in ELRB on page 87, PLATE 28. Grant's lettered strands are as follows: A = yellow, B = red, C = purple. The three strands can be loose, attached at the top, or in a special case - the "magic braid" - attached at both top and bottom. Here, the strands are loose and held in a clamp for convenience.

3flatThe starting position, YELLOW-RED-PURPLE. Begin by taking two strands in your left hand, and the remaining one in your right.
3flatAt every point, you will have two strands in one hand and one strand in the other. A single movement will pass the outer strand from the two-strand hand over the inner, to become the inner strand in the other hand. First movement passes YELLOW over RED, from the left hand to the right.
3flatNext, pass PURPLE over YELLOW from right hand to left. This position is Plate 28, Fig 2.
3flatRED over PURPLE, Fig 3.
3flatYELLOW over RED, Fig 4.
3flatPURPLE over YELLOW.
3flatRED over PURPLE. Note that at this point, you have made one complete cycle... the strands have made it back to their original order.
3flatContinue the same movement over and over until the desired length is reached.
