The fucking machine pictured here is my original prototype, and uses the same motor/electronics (but nothing else) as the v2 finished TFM. It illustrates an alternative drive mechanism.
In this approach, the drive arm is in two pieces connected by a flex joint (I used a length of rubber tubing and two pipe clamps). The lower arm is driven from a spinning wheel. The upper arm moves straight up-and-down through a bushing (plastic pipe, here).
In v2, I used a different mechanism. The v1 approach works fine, but requires a longer permanent drive arm due to the flex joint that makes the final drive linear. Trying to shorten the drive arm while maintaining the same stroke distance increases the forces on upper drive arm, flex joint, and bushing. It also greatly increases the operating noise level.
Although less than attractive, I used this unit for almost a year. The flex joint popped off a few times before I put on the pipe clamps.
